Sturgis Step Outside - Getting Youth Outside

The South Dakota Game Fish and Parks, Sturgis Police, Sturgis PAL and the Meade County Sheriff’s Office joined forces at Bear Butte State Park on June 3, 2017. 

The event had over 80 participants; working with kids ages 5-17 in an effort to get them to appreciate (being outdoors) the opportunities afforded by working with mentors in several activities; archery, BB gun shoot, fishing, trapping, and animal identification.

The Meade County Commission held its first meeting of June on Wednesday, the 14th.

Auctioneer Bob Bertolotto appeared to give a report and a check in the amount of $7,882 for surplus items the county sold at the recent joint school/city/county auction.

We started preliminary work on the 2018 budget, but took no action.  We’ll start the heavy lifting at our next meeting.  Health insurance, as it is for every individual, company, or governmental body is going to be the hardest thing to figure out.  Meade County has a small group plan with Wellmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield that, because of high claim history the past three years, is looking at a huge premium increase.

The engineering estimates provided by the state Department of Transportation for the Black Hawk sidewalk project came in higher than expected.  This project, you might remember, is being done through a grant administered by the DOT, which approved only so much money for the project; any additional costs above that amount have to be borne by the county.  This project was approved by the county in 2013, but because of foot-dragging by the DOT, inflation has made the project more expensive.  We approved the estimates, but are hopeful the bids will come in less.

The one bid to construct the hoop building to house sand at Piedmont was rejected.  Meade County Highway Superintendent Lincoln Shuck will be looking at a different design that hopefully will cost less.

We approved the 2017 pavement marking agreement and right-of-way certificates for the Nemo bridge project.  

We approved the special event alcoholic beverage license for the 2nd Annual Brandon Delzer Bull Riding event, which will be held June 24th.

Meade County Tax Dollar

For 2017, the largest share of every property tax dollar in Meade County goes to schools (56%), the County's share is 27%, Cities are 12%, and other entities are around 4 to 5%.

General Statement of Duties

Under the direct supervision of the Highway Superintendent and general supervision of the Shop Foreman, is responsible for performing skilled and semi-skilled mechanical work in maintenance of all County equipment and vehicles.

Hours of Work

This position is a non-exempt position normally scheduled for 40 hours per week. Actual hours may vary. This position is subject to assisting other Meade County departments at the discretion of the Department Head.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

1. Perform welding, fabricates and repairs to highway equipment.
2. Repair and maintain all County equipment and vehicles in the shop, at satellite shops, and in the field.
3. Use test diagnostic equipment to ensure equipment is in working order.
4. Operate pay-loaders, trucks, scrapers, motor graders, and tractors as needed.
5. Plan and coordinate on work schedule and time management.
6. Maintain inventory and part records.
7. Pick up and deliver parts, supplies and equipment as needed by the Highway Department and other authorized County personnel.
8. Maintain shop in a neat and orderly manner.
9. Perform duties in a manner consistent with safe practices.
10. Wear Personal Protective Equipment when required.
11. Attend meetings and seminars as assigned.
12. Perform other such duties and functions as deemed necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience and Education:

1. High School diploma or G.E.D. certification.
2. Vo-tech degree in Diesel Mechanics or related field.
3. Two (2) years of mechanic experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be acceptable.
4. Currently possess or ability to obtain a valid South Dakota Class A Commercial Drivers License and certification in air brakes.
5. Knowledgeable experience with hydraulic systems, electrical systems, diesel and gas engines, transmissions and drive trains.
6. Proficiency in welding and operation of machine shop equipment.
7. Ability to work unsupervised.
8. Ability to work well with others and get along with the general public.
