MeadeGEO Training Classes - 3/21/13

For those that have not been able to attend the previous training classes for the new MeadeGeo site, Meade County Equalization & Planning will be holding two additional training classes on March 21st at 10:00 am and at 2:00 pm. If you are interested in attending, please contact us to reserve a spot in one of these classes at your earliest convenience. The class will run approximately 90 minutes and will be held in the glass conference room on the second level of the Erskine Office Building located at 1300 Sherman Street in Sturgis.

This new website has replaced Meade County's Beacon mapping site.

Citizens Requested to Serve on the Meade County Planning Board

Sturgis, SD - The Meade County Board of Commissioners is accepting applications from individuals who are interested in serving on the Meade County Planning Board.  

  • Two (2) Openings are Available
  • Appointments are for a Five (5) Year Term  
  • Appointment will be effective January 2013
  • All Residents of Meade County are Eligible


The Meade County Planning Board is a seven-member advisory Board whose members are appointed by the Meade County Board of Commissioners.

The Planning Board is tasked with ensuring the county ordinances are implemented consistently and offers oversight to the growth, planning, and development activities in the County.  This Board makes recommendations to the Meade County Commission regarding planning functions and procedures.  

Regular meetings of the County Planning Board are held on the third Monday of each month at 1:00 p.m.

Individuals who want to be considered for an appointment are asked to fill out a Citizen Interest Application form and submit same to the Meade County Board of Commissioners, 1300 Sherman Street, STE 212, Sturgis, SD 57785.  Citizen Interest Application available at: www.meadecounty.org via Human Resources Office.

All applications must be received by 5:00 p.m., Friday, November 2, 2012.

Revised Ordinance #20

The following ordinance was recently revised:

Highlights of the changes are listed below:

  • 1 1/2 acre lots are permitted in Meade County now, as long as the requirements are met in Section 4.04 (B) Modified High Density Subdivisions.  (See page 19 of revised Ordinance #20.)
  • An Accessory Apartment: an apartment is fine, either within the home or attached to the principal dwelling with an approved building permit as long as it meets the requirements.  (See Section 4.02 Accessory Apartment, page 17-18.)
  • A second dwelling may be permitted on a parcel with a primary dwelling as long as it meets certain conditions.  (See Section 4.03 Second Permanent Dwelling, page 18 of revised Ordinance #20.)

Free FEMA (FIRM) Flood Map Class

The Meade County Equalization & Planning Department will be holding a FREE CLASS on "How to Check and Print a FEMA (FIRM) Flood Map from Your Own Computer".  If you want to learn how to check on a property to determine if it is in a flood plain or not and how to print a Flood Map with the FIRM (Flood Insurance Rate Map) Panel information, this would be a good class for you.  We will also address questions concerning Flood Plains.  If time allows and if anyone is interested, we will also cover "How to Make a Wetlands Map" from the National Wetlands Inventory.  A workbook will be provided.
